Are you a yo-yo dieter?

I was one of those people who started and stopped repeatedly before something finally clicked in my head and I actually stuck with it . There comes a time when you realize that you just have to suck it up and work your butt off for what you want! For me, that time came when I was finishing my third year of university. I realized that I was about to enter into another graduating year. and I was quite a bit heavier than I had been in high school. I was miserable the year I graduated high school, and I spent much of the year by myself because I was too self-conscious about my weight to actually go to any of the events. I did not want to go through that again, so I decided to put my foot down and make a change.

Changing your habits isn’t easy, and I am not going to lie to you and tell you that it is. It is hard work physically, it is hard work in the kitchen, and it is hard work mentally and emotionally. You need to exercise regularly, eat clean 90% of the time, and deal with the mental battles you will face when it comes to temptation. You will also need to deal with the emotional ups and downs that comes along with a fitness journey. You are going to give in to temptation at some point, and you’ll feel guilty. You’re going to see progress and feel great. You’re also likely going to hit a plateau at some point or maybe even gain a few pounds back, and you’ll have to deal with the negative emotions that come along with that.

The important thing is not how many times you slip up or make a mistake, but in how many times to get back up and keep fighting. One bad day is not going to destroy your progress, but one good day is not going to help you achieve your goals. You just need to keep fighting the mental and emotional battles, keep on track with your nutrition 90% of the time, and keep working out regularly.

Slow progress is progress, so don’t give up! Each time you give up, you will just put the weight that you lost right back on. Then when you decide to get started again, you’ll have even more weight to lose. You need to remember that the time is going to pass regardless, so you may as well keep pushing toward your goals.

If you are ready to make the commitment to yourself and a healthier future, we should talk. Send me an email to hfmxj@stu.ca with the subject line “I’m ready to transform” to discuss the opportunity to be a part of a challenge group of individuals going through the same process!

Which body type do you prefer?

Personally I am aiming for my own version of C! Tons of muscle definition, less body fat, but not too much muscle. This is my own personal view on what I want MY body to look like.

Every body is different and has different capabilities, so it is okay to visualize a certain goal, but you should not get caught up in looking exactly like that goal body type. Everyone can achieve great results and get fit bodies if they work hard with their workouts and in the kitchen, but your body type may give you a bit of a different look than the one for which you were aiming.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these body types. These women all look great, and it is just a matter of personal preference. As women we need to support one another, not try to bring each other down. For example, I would not like to have as much muscle as the woman in photo D. That is something that she worked her butt off to accomplish, and it is something that she can be proud of.

Whatever your goal may be, just remember that everyone has their own personal preference for how they want to look. Someone else might want to look like the woman in photo d, and just because I personally would not like that on myself doesn’t mean that I respect her decision any less. Or maybe your preference is to look like the woman in photo b – others who prefer to look like a c or d should respect that personal choice.

As long as you are happy with your body, you shouldn’t allow the opinions of others to dictate your personal choice. Don’t change your goal based on what other people think! Those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind don’t matter. At the end of the day, just be yourself!

Are you addicted to junk food?

I saw a post from one of my challengers in my free Health and Fitness group yesterday, and I decided to make this blog post about it because I feel as though it is important. Anyone who has ever struggled with food addiction will understand this, and anyone who hasn’t, probably won’t. Some people may even find this notion completely ridiculous, but if you haven’t been through it, it would be hard to grasp. So, what is addiction anyway?

“A physical or psychological need for a habit-forming substance, such as a drug or alcohol” Dictionary.com

The idea here is that food can be an addiction much like alcohol, drugs, tobacco, gambling, etc. If you struggle with food addiction, chances are you have formed a habit of eating snacks as you watch television or movies. It can be so drilled into your mind that it is actually hard for you to sit through an entire show or movie without getting a snack of some sort. I struggled with this bigtime when I started my fitness journey, and I had to ease my way into eating healthy by still snacking at night with healthier options. It is not easy to change these habits, but just like any other addiction that is damaging to your health, you have to work at it to break these habits.

Maybe this kind of addiction isn’t as obvious or extreme as some of the others out there, but it is still detrimental to your health in the long run. From what I’ve read, it seems there are differing opinions on this topic from health professionals. However, having been through it, I strongly believe that eating can be a psychological addiction.

“A strong or harmful need to regularly have something (such as a drug) or do something (such as gamble)” Merriam Webster

In this case, the strong and harmful need factor would be applied to junk food, and the act would be considered eating. What a lot of people don’t seem to understand is that for many people struggling with weight issues, eating is more than fuel for our bodies. For some of us, eating is a form of comfort. We get sad, depressed, angry, frustrated, stressed out, et cetera, and we immediately head for the junk food. Sometimes this is completely subconscious behaviour, but we do it anyway. This ends up being a NEVER-ENDING cycle! You eat to make yourself feel better for negative emotions, and then you gain weight. The weight gain makes you feel even worse, so you go for the junk food again to feel better. You then gain more weight, eat more junk, and the cycle goes on and on and on until you put a stop to it.

“… most addictive behavior is not related to either physical tolerance or exposure to cues. People compulsively use drugs, gamble, or shop nearly always in reaction to being emotionally stressed, whether or not they have a physical addiction. Since these psychologically based addictions are not based on drug or brain effects, they can account for why people frequently switch addictive actions from one drug to a completely different kind of drug, or even to a non-drug behavior. The focus of the addiction isn’t what matters; it’s the need to take action under certain kinds of stress.” Psychology Today

What does this mean? Well, what this means to me is that it is possible for you to shift your “addiction” from food to fitness. It honestly worked for me, and I think it can work for everyone else too. Exercise releases endorphins into your brain, which ultimately makes you feel better overall! When I finish an intense workout, I usually feel refreshed. There have been many times when I’ve been upset or angry when I went down to do an intense cardio workout like Turbo Fire or Combat, and by the end of the workout, I felt a million times better than when I started.

If you start gradually decreasing your bad food habits and exercising on a regular basis, you WILL start to see results. You’ll start to feel better about yourself, you’ll sense the brain fog from all of the junk food start to lift, and you’ll start regaining your confidence as you lose weight from your positive life choices.

I can’t wait to help you along your journey as your free coach, and I look forward to watching you transform!

What a coach should do

I always felt out of place at the gym before I started this fitness journey. I always felt like everyone was staring at me and making fun of me behind my back for being so overweight. I couldn’t stand to go to the gym, because the whole time I was there, I was more focused on watching the other people to make sure they weren’t staring at me. It seems silly to people who never experience this, but you’ll most likely understand to an extent if you are overweight.

The fact of the matter is, chances are they aren’t actually paying any attention to you. Even if they are, their opinion doesn’t matter! I think a majority of people would look at someone overweight in a gym and think “Good for them, they are doing something about it and working towards being healthier and happier!” Everyone has to start somewhere, and anyone who really matters will be proud that you are making that effort to better yourself.

You shouldn’t have to worry about people putting you down for your weight to try to “fat-shame” you into working it off. Getting down on yourself and feeling like crap about your body the way it is now is NOT going to help you get results. What will help you get results is being motivated and encouraged by a positive force. Someone who will help you learn how to love and appreciate the small steps forward, and who will help you through the small steps backward without judging you for them.

That is what I had when I started my fitness journey almost 2 years ago, and it is a big factor in my becoming a coach. I would LOVE to be that person for you!

Do you blame your coach?

This happens all the time! People cheat on their meal plans or they skip out on workouts, and then they are shocked that they aren’t seeing progress. The fact of the matter is, you need to earn your missed workouts and your cheat meals. When you’re starting out and you cheat regularly, you are not going to see the progress you’re hoping for.

People like to blame their coach or the program if they aren’t successful, but the reality is that the products are proven to work. Everyone that purchases a Beachbody program is provided with the exact same tools! Though the results do differ depending on personal body types and different starting points and whatnot, everyone should be able to achieve great results for their own body type. Getting results depends on your commitment to following the program as it was meant to be followed.

If you refuse to change your eating habits, you’re not going to see the results you want! Some people tend to think that since they just worked out, they’ve earned themselves a treat of some sort. If you have that line of thinking, you’re setting yourself up for failure. All you do when you give yourself a treat after a workout is negate all of the work that you just put in!

If you think you can skip out on some workouts because at least a couple of days is better than what you did before – nothing – I repeat, you’re not going to see much results! You have to work out consistently if you want to see positive changes. A few times a week is better than nothing for sure, but if you’re serious about this weight loss journey, you need to make the commitment to AT LEAST 4 days. You should be working out more days than you aren’t if you want to see progress.

If you want to blame your coach for not seeing any progress, you need to take a close look at yourself first. Ask yourself if you’ve been following the plan exactly as it was designed. Ask yourself if you’ve been cheating on your meal plan. Ask yourself if you’ve been skipping workouts. If you’ve been following everything as it was designed and still aren’t seeing progress, then maybe you could blame your coach or the program – but chances are you would be better off visiting your doctor to try and determine if you have some kind of health issue that is preventing you from successfully losing weight.

Click Here if you want to try a program that definitely works. I have personally tried 7 different Beachbody fitness programs, and know from personal experience that they work. I would be happy to speak with anyone about these programs, or any others. If you are ready to commit to a program and get started on your own transformation just let me know!

Health and Fitness Challenge

Hey guys, I have an extra little challenge for all of you this week. You opened this blog article for a reason, whether you have a lot of weight to lose, a little weight to lose, or even if you just need to tone up with muscle definition. No matter what your current level may be, or what your goals may be, I have a challenge that I think can help each of you achieve your goals.

As Darren Hardy wrote, “the first step toward change is awareness. If you want to get from where you are to where you want to be, you have to start by becoming aware of the choices that lead you away from your desired destination. Become very conscious of every choice you make today so you can begin to make smarter choices moving forward.”

To accomplish this, I want you to picture where you are RIGHT NOW. Next, I want you to picture where you want to be. Then I want you all to start keeping a record of your daily activity, water intake, and the foods you eat. If you are SERIOUS about your goals, you WILL do this. My coach got me to do it when I was starting out, and now I want you guys to do it because it seriously helps. There is something about seeing that DQ blizzard listed on your daily food journal as it destroys your healthy goal for the day that suddenly makes you think “maybe I don’t need this after all”. When you track your physical activity on a chart, you’ll see empty spaces on days you didn’t work out and will start to want to fill them in – even if you just do a 10 minute workout.

I want you to write it all down, every single day, for a week. If you don’t find that it is helping you be more motivated, or helping you to stay on track, then you can cut out at the end of the week. No excuses! If you make this commitment for 7 days, I really think you’ll start to see improvements. I highly recommend that you try getting a friend to do it with you so that you can both keep each other on track and for accountability. If you start slacking off, that way you’ll have a friend to help pull you back in – and vice versa.

“The magic is not in the complexity of the task; the magic is in the doing of simple things repeatedly and long enough to ignite the miracle of the compound effect.” – Darren Hardy. What this is getting at is that even though the task that I have set before you might seem insignificant and simple, it can be the determining factor in whether or not you are successful in achieving your goals. It may seem like a waste of time at first glance, but as I’ve learned through this book, it is the smaller things repeated over time that make the biggest impact.

If you want to learn more about this for yourself, I highly recommend The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. I have the E-book, and it is a truly great read. It isn’t even about health, fitness, or weight loss – it is just about how you can improve and create success for yourself in any aspect of your life by employing simple methods.

Do it for YOU

One thing that absolutely drives me insane is when people ask me why I work out, and frame it like “well who are you trying to look good for/impress”. This is absolutely ridiculous, because it implies that the only reason to exercise or eat healthy is to look good or impress people. Do those things help make you look better, lose weight, add muscle, etc? Sure they do. However, they also do a number of other things for your health and personal well-being that are much more important than simply the way you look.

I chose to get into fitness for myself, not to impress anyone else. I got into health and fitness to feel better about myself and improve my own quality of life. I was sick of being depressed and hating my own body, and I knew that I needed to make these changes if I ever wanted to get back to myself. I put on some makeup before I go and do a workout. Nobody sees me working out because I have a home gym, but once again, I don’t do it for anyone else – I DO IT FOR ME! It makes me feel better, more confident, and I find that I can hit my workout harder.

Stop worrying about what other people think, because there will always be people out there that want to discourage you from what you are doing. Chances are, if they are trying to discourage you, it is simply because they were too afraid to do it themselves and they want to get you to give up so that it validates their decision not to follow your lead. Instead of giving them the satisfaction of being right, PROVE THEM WRONG. Keep working for your goals, and be a positive role model for those around you. Maybe once your friends start to see that it is really working wonders for your life as a whole, they will finally decide to join you and start their own health and fitness journey.

Don’t let failures hold you back

This is something that everyone should live by, and it holds great meaning for those into health and fitness as well. You are bound to slip up a few times, or even a bunch of time, and make some mistakes along your journey. That is perfectly normal, and it would actually be kind of weird if you DIDN’T make any mistakes or slip ups! Everyone has bad days sometimes where they just don’t have it in them to resist temptation. The holidays can be tough, because you’re surrounded with yummy treats. Vacations can be a menace because it is easier to grab a snack on the fly than to make a healthy meal. You don’t have to be good 100% of the time, and it is okay to splurge a little bit occasionally.

The problem with these “slip up’s” is not that you had them, it is often the way in which you think about them. For example, you have a big meal over the holidays with dessert. That is okay, it is a special occasion and everyone deserves to have what they want over the holidays. However, if you start worrying about that meal and thinking that you totally destroyed your progress, you are going to run into trouble. That is where people go wrong and start thinking “well, I already screwed myself so I might as well have more treats”, or “…so I might as well skip my workouts”. Once you get into that line of thinking, it can be hard to bounce back.

You need to stop thinking of those slip-ups as failures, and start thinking of it as a reward for all of the hard work you’ve put in thus far. It is only a failure if you choose to quit because of those slip ups, instead of using them as motivation to do better!

Post-workout treat

It never ceases to amaze me, but I know that a lot of people actually think this way! Some people will workout and then they think that it earns them a meal from McDonalds afterwards. They will then come to me wondering why they don’t see results. Well, the answer is simple. You NEED to eat clean, and you need to exercise.

If you work out for an hour and then you go to a fast food joint for supper immediately after, you are negating all of that work you just put in. You cannot expect to lose weight by treating yourself to junk food after a workout. The biggest part of weight loss is actually your nutrition, so if you want to be successful in losing the weight you have got to start eating healthier.

It’s never too late

As a Beachbody coach, I have come across plenty of people in their 40’s and 50’s or above who are trying to lose weight and get healthy. Your age shouldn’t be a limitation. In fact, we gave my grandmother a Beachbody fitness program for Christmas this year! If you can move around, you can exercise at any age. Just modify the moves, it is as simple as that! Only do what you can, only go as low as you can, and start by using light weights in the beginning of your journey and work your way up.

Just ask the many people who start in their 40’s or 50’s or sometimes even later than that, or the many people who were obese when they started their journey. These people may have thought that they were too far gone to ever lose the weight again! In my opinion, the hardest part is the first few weeks to a month. During that initial timeframe, it is almost more of a mental challenge than a physical one. Of course your body will be challenge, but you have to get over the “I can’t do this” mentality before you can be successful.

Like I mentioned above, you just have to modify the moves and do what you are capable of doing. When I started there were certain exercises I simply had to skip because I lacked the strength to do them safely. There were many exercises that I had to complete using the modified version. Plus, I would have to pause the workout a BUNCH to get a drink and calm my heart rate down a bit. It was a struggle, but I just told myself that I could do it, and so I did. Over time I got better and better, I could do more exercises the regular way, I could finally do the moves I previously had skipped, and I found I didn’t have to pause the workout nearly as often.

I am not saying it will be easy to change your mental mindset, because it won’t. It will be a challenge, but what doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t change you! You won’t regret the changes that take place once you make these life changes, but you may regret it if you don’t.
